Honeymoons in Maine

The northernmost of the states of New England, Maine is famous for its delicious seafood. Nicknamed the Pine Tree State, it is also known for its scenery. But there’s much more to see in Maine than pine trees. There are also majestic mountains, pristine waterways, and rocky coastlines. All this adds up to a romantic honeymoon destination.

Maine may not have a reputation as a honeymoon haven, but it has lots to offer newlyweds. You can enjoy outdoor recreation, great shopping, fine dining and sightseeing during your stay. Some of the best places to go on a honeymoon in Maine include the following:

Bar Harbor – Located on Maine’s largest island, Bar Harbor is one of the state’s most popular vacation spots. It is adjacent to Acadia National Park, which boasts some of the nation’s most unique scenery in its granite cliffs and cobblestone beaches. There is plenty for couples to do there, including hiking, biking, swimming or going for a scenic drive. In town, you’ll find lots of small shops and art galleries where you can pick up unique clothing, accessories, artwork and souvenirs. Spas, wineries and a variety of entertainment options round out the town’s offerings.

Kennebunkport – Perhaps most famous for being the summer home of former President George H. W. Bush, Kennebunkport is one of New England’s most upscale summer colonies. Tourism is the basis of the town’s economy, but its roots as a fishing and shipbuilding village remain evident. Highlights of Kennebunkport for newlyweds include the romantic On the Marsh restaurant and the Seashore Trolley Museum, which offers rides along the Atlantic Shore Line Railway in an old-fashioned trolley.

Bethel – This tiny town in western Maine is located on the banks of the Androscoggin River, at the base of Paradise Hill. It is popular among winter sports enthusiasts due to its proximity to the popular Sunday River ski resort. There are also lots of other opportunities for outdoor recreation in the area, including fishing, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and golfing. Bethel has lots of small shops, pubs, taverns and restaurants to enjoy as well.

Bangor – Maine’s third most populous city, Bangor is widely heralded for its beautiful cityscape. It features amazing 19th-century architecture, a variety of statues and lovely parks such as Bangor City Forest. Some of the Bangor area’s most romantic accommodations include Old Winterport Commercial House, an 1883 inn and stagecoach stop that has been converted into a bed and breakfast, and Saltwater Farm at French’s Point, which features gorgeous architecture and a private beach.

These Maine honeymoon destinations each have something unique to offer couples who are starting a life together. If you’re looking for romance but want something other than the typical beach honeymoon, you can certainly find it in Maine.
