Honeymoons in Alaska

When it comes to honeymoons, or even vacations in general, Alaska may not be the first destination that comes to mind. But for the adventurous, the northernmost state holds many treasures that simply can’t be found anywhere else in the U.S. And for newlyweds, the cold weather is just another excuse to snuggle! Here are some of the best honeymoon destinations you’ll find in Alaska.

Juneau – The state capital, Juneau is located in southern Alaska in what’s called the Inside Passage. Visitors are astounded by the breathtaking scenery, which includes mountains, coastlines and glaciers. You’ll find shops, restaurants, pubs, museums and historic sites in the downtown area. Glaciers and whale watching areas are just a stone’s throw away, and hiking trails are abundant.

Kodiak – Kodiak Island is the second largest island in the United States after Hawaii Island. The beautiful Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge makes up two-thirds of the island’s land area and includes terrain ranging from mountains to wetlands and everything in between. Two of the most popular activities in Kodiak are fishing and bear watching, but the downtown area also features harbors, shops and a historical park.

Fairbanks – Located in the heart of the state, Fairbanks offers visitors the complete Alaskan experience. The Chena River runs through the city, allowing for rafting, kayaking and fishing. There are plenty of skiing and wildlife viewing areas, and local shops are filled with art and jewelry made by native Alaskans. Historic Pioneer Park pays tribute to the city’s roots in the gold rush. There are spectacular views of Mount McKinley from the city, and if you visit in the winter you’ll have an excellent chance of viewing the Northern Lights.

Anchorage – Anchorage has everything you could possibly want in a city: shopping, fine dining, performing arts, museums and a vibrant nightlife. Yet it’s just a short drive from some of Alaska’s famed wilderness areas. Summers are surprisingly warm and great for hiking and fishing. Popular winter activities include dog sledding, snowmobiling and skiing.

Denali National Park – Home to Mount McKinley, Denali National Park is one of Alaska’s most popular wilderness destinations. Accommodations include wilderness resorts and campgrounds. Cars are only allowed up to 14 miles into the park, making it the perfect place for a nice, quiet honeymoon getaway. A variety of wilderness programs are available through the park’s visitor centers.

Honeymooning in Alaska is guaranteed to be an experience you’ll never forget. Whether you and your beloved are looking for a great place to enjoy winter sports, a unique cultural experience or a wildlife adventure, you can find all that and much more in the state. And the gorgeous landscape and beautiful Northern Lights make Alaska an ideal honeymoon destination.
