Honeymoon in South America
What makes a honeymoon in South America so special? Location, location,
location! Which translates to white sandy beaches, tropical rainforests, thundering waterfalls and exotic
wildlife.
Countries located in South America include Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile,
Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela, all offering honeymooners unique and romantic honeymoon
spots. Below are just a few "must see" destinations for couples considering a honeymoon in South
America:
Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil
Rio de Janeiro offers honeymooning couples much in the way of romantic spots and
activities. First, there are the beaches, specifically Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, where you
can relax and take in the fabulous views. And, speaking of views, be sure to take a ride on the cable car which
takes you to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain. There you'll be treated to awesome views of Rio de Janeiro below.
You'll also not want to miss the train tour to Corcovado Mountain, where you'll travel through the
dense rain forest of Tijuca to view the statue of Christ the Redeemer, as well as more incredible views of Rio
below.
While in Rio, do be sure to check out Jardim Botânico, which is
a 340-acre botanical garden featuring more than 5,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants and
trees.
Iguazú Falls - Argentina/Brazil
Border
The reason Niagara Falls is a favorite among honeymooners is the fact that
waterfalls are just romantic. And Iguazú Falls, on the border of Argentina and Brazil, are taller than
Niagara Falls, and more than twice as wide. In fact, first lady Eleanor Roosevelt is said to have
exclaimed "Poor Niagara" when she first saw Iguazú Falls.
Iguazú provides honeymooners with spectacular views and accessible trails and
walkways from which to view the Falls, which are actually a collection of waterfalls divided by islands, the most
spectacular of which is Devil's Throat. You can also see the Falls from a helicopter, as well as boat tours which
take you under the Falls. You will want to schedule at least a couple of days around the Falls, exploring the many
trails of Iguazú National Park on the Argentina side.
Beaches of Mancora,
Peru
The beaches around Mancora, northern Peru, are considered to be the most
beautiful beaches in Peru, and great for surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing, with warm waters year round. Not
only is the area beautiful, but you can find plentiful lodging at relatively cheap prices. Check out the Muelle
Viejo Bungalows on Los Organos Beach for lodging, as well as Saucelito Beach in Las Pocitas. Located nearby is
Pozas de Barro, a natural mud thermal pool.
Punta del Este - Uruguay
Located in Uruguay, on a small peninsula where the Rio de la Plata and Atlantic Ocean meet,
Punta del Este is fast becoming the hot spot in South America for its 20 miles of pristine beaches
and swinging nightlife. It's location on a peninsula means you have your choice of the type of beach experience you
want, from the calm waves of Mansa Beach, to the wild surf of Brava Beach, where you can go
surfing, windsurfing and body boarding. While there, be sure to check out Isla de Lobos, an island with one of the
world's largest sea-lion colonies.
Honeymooners will find numerous world-class resorts, including Mantra Punta del Este
Resort, a Mediterranean-styled resort with private terraces, just steps from the beach, and Conrad
Punta del Este Resort & Casino, which boasts the only Las Vegas-style casino in the
region.
The Amazon Rainforest
Begin your married life in one of the most exotic spots on Earth - the Amazon Rainforest, the
largest tropical rainforest in the world. You can choose to explore the Amazon by taking an Amazon
riverboat tour, or an Amazon jungle tour. Or, maybe you'll just want to park yourselves at one of the many
jungle lodges in the rainforest. One real unique jungle lodge is the Ariau Amazon Towers, a
tree-top hotel located on the banks of the Rio Negro, 35 miles northwest of Manaus, Brazil. If you're wanting
luxury in the rainforest, you might also consider the Reserva Amazonica Lodge in Southern
Peru. Here you can enjoy a massage at their Ena Spa while watching the sun set on the Amazon.
Torres del Paine National Park -
Chile
For the honeymooning couple who are into hiking, consider Chile's Parque Nacional Torres del
Paine, where you'll find some of the best hiking in the world. The national park is often referred to as the "Park
at the End of the World," due to its location in Patagonia, the southern-most end of South America. There
you'll find waterfalls, glaciers, awesome granite pillars and breathtaking views.
Galapagos Islands
Come celebrate the uniqueness of your love by taking a cruise to one of the most unique areas
of the world - the Galapagos Islands. The Galapagos Islands consist of 13 large and hundreds of smaller volcanic
islands in the Pacific Ocean off the western coast of Ecuador. On these islands you'll encounter flamingos,
penguins, giant tortoises, iguanas, Sally Lightfoot crabs and a host of diverse birds. Quasar
Expeditions offers several different types of cruises to the Galapagos, including naturalist cruises,
ideal for bird watchers and photographers, and active cruises, for people looking for more activities such as long
hikes, snorkeling and kayaking.
The Machu Picchu Historical Reserve -
Peru
Often referred to as "The Lost City of the Incas," Machu Picchu is located 7,970 feet above
sea level, above the Urubamba Valley in Peru. The Machu Picchu Historical Reserve is located in a cloud forest
around 8,000 feet above sea level, between the Andes and the Amazon basin,70 miles from Cusco. You might want to
consider a stay at the Pueblo Hotel, Inkaterra’s boutique Machu Picchu hotel, located near the
