Cheap Honeymoon Destinations

Unless you want to be in debt for a few years while you pay off your dream honeymoon, it pays to find cheap honeymoon destinations that not only are good for your budget, but high in romance at the same time. Are there such places? You bet!

While the islands of Fiji might not make that list, other romantic destinations will. Here some tips, as well as destinations, which can turn your cheap honeymoon into one fabulous romantic getaway.

Save on Airfare by Staying Someplace Locally

Don't think there are places within a day's drive from you which offer a romantic setting for a honeymooning couple? Then you're not looking hard enough! If you live in a rural area, there must be some romantic, big city within a few hundred miles

you can choose. Conversely, if you live in a big city, there must be some mountain or lake nearby where you can spend your honeymoon in a romantic cabin with fireplace and Jacuzzi tub. Some great mountain resort areas with lower-priced hotels and B&Bs near you might include:

  • Lake Tahoe, California
  • Prescott, Arizona
  • Hot Springs, Arkansas
  • Yosemite, California
  • Ouray, Colorado
  • Great Smokey Mountains, Tennessee
  • Blackwater Falls State Park, Canaan Valley, West Virginia
  • Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Cheap Honeymoon Cruises

For some couples, a cruise makes economical sense in terms of honeymoon budget planning. Your food, drink, on-board activities and accommodations are not only under one roof, but also part of one price. Plus, with this type of honeymoon, you can still see new places each time the ship makes port during your cruise. Let your budget dictate what you can and cannot afford in terms of your honeymoon destination.

If your budget won't allow a 7 or 10-day cruise, why not opt for a 3-day or 4-day cruise instead? Popular 3-day cruises include:

  • Long Beach or San Diego, California to Baja, Mexico
  • Miami or Port Canaveral, Florida to the Bahamas
  • New York City to Halifax, Nova Scotia
  • Los Angeles, California to Vancouver, Canada
  • Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
  • Rotterdam, Netherlands to Le Havre, France

Some Like it Hot

Hot springs, that is. Want a romantic honeymoon in an affordable resort area which won't break the bank? Consider honeymooning in a tourist destination abundant with natural hot springs, like Wyoming, which is one of the hot springs capitals of the world. One place not to miss is Hot Springs State Park in Thermopolis, Wyoming. There you'll find indoor and outdoor swimming pools, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, vapor cave, three Jacuzzis, three giant slides and mineral pool. Cheap lodging choices include budget motels and hotels like Days Inn and Super 8.

Another area to consider for your hot springs honeymoon is Desert Hot Springs, California, a city of spas and resorts located in the foothills of Joshua Tree National Park and just minutes from Palm Springs. Yes, you can splurge at some of the more expensive spas and resorts in the area (think Two Bunch Palms Resort and Spa), but you can also find cheaper spots which are very romantic, like Desert Hot Springs Spa Hotel, a Mid-Century, 50-room hotel which features eight natural hot mineral water pools – one Olympic size pool and seven large circular Jacuzzi and soaking pools. Temperatures in the pools range from 70°F to 104°F.

Skip the 5-Star Hotel and Go for a Cozy Bed & Breakfast

Yes, a 5-star resort or hotel is awfully inviting. The Egyptian cotton sheets, the on-site spa, the championship golf course, the room service... But, if you can't afford the frills, you can still honeymoon in a romantic setting by choosing a romantic B&B. Try the Inn at Ellis River in Jackson, New Hampshire, which is listed as one of the "Top 12 Overall Worldwide - BedandBreakfast.com Awards for 2008 - 2009." The village of Jackson, by the way, is known for its "honeymoon bridge," which is an historic red-covered bridge where honeymooners have been stopping for a "good luck kiss" since the 1800s.

Stay at Someone Else's House

Finally, you can really save if you can stay free at someone else's house. Works well, of course, if you know someone with a great spread in a great location. But, what if you don't? Then participate in a home exchange! There are numerous home exchange networks online where you can find people willing to swap homes with you. You may find homes in great U.S. tourist areas, such as New York City or San Francisco, or perhaps a home in Italy, Ireland or Greece. It helps if you live in a vacation destination desirable for swapping.
